How the League One Works, and How It Bets

24 clubs, 46 matches each. The top two go up automatically. Third to sixth contest the play-offs for the last promotion place. Four clubs are relegated to League Two, the widest trapdoor in the pyramid. That structure is what our projections are built around: the zones on this page are the real ones, not a template borrowed from the division above.

The League One is the tier where home advantage bites hardest, and where thin markets move on team news faster than prices can follow. Across 47 matches this season so far it produced 3.06 goals a game: 60% of fixtures went over 2.5, and both teams scored in 66%. The home side won 40%, 30% finished level, and 30% were won on the road.

Those base rates matter more than they look. A model that assumes Premier League scoring in League Two will overprice goals all season, which is why every division here is measured on its own matches before any club is rated. Feed a fixture into the Prognosis Engine and you are pricing it against this division's numbers, not a generic average.

The Shape of a League One Season

Forty-six matches with four clubs relegated, which means a third of the division can still be fighting for survival in April. Midweek travel is long, pitches deteriorate through winter, and squads are thin enough that two injuries in one position reshape a season.

Prices are softer than the divisions above and the reason is simple: fewer people are looking. The catch is depth, a bookmaker will happily take a small stake on a wrong price and refuse a large one, so an edge here is real but capped.

The division's own numbers set the frame for every market on it. With 30% of matches drawn and 60% going past two and a half goals, a draw-heavy profile like this rewards patience on the double chance and punishes anyone who assumes every game is an open one. Both teams scored in 66% of them, which is the number to hold in mind before taking a price on a clean sheet, and all of it is measured on 47 completed matches rather than a feeling about how the league plays.

How to Use This Page

The table is the record; the board below it is the forecast. Read them together rather than one after the other: a club five points clear with a hard run-in and a club five points behind with an easy one are closer than the standings make them look, and that difference is exactly what the model prices.

What it cannot see is worth naming. This model reads goals, so it knows nothing about a suspension in a six-man defence, a waterlogged pitch, or a club playing its third away game in eight days. Where you know something the numbers do not, your judgement should beat ours: and where you do not, the fair price is a better starting point than a feeling about form.

The practical route through: check the fixtures below for the coming round, take the model's probabilities as a baseline, then compare them with the price on offer. If the bookmaker is longer than the fair price, you have found something; if not, the honest answer is to pass. Our betting tips only publish the fixtures that clear that bar, and the Scenario Machine shows what each result would mean for the table above.
